A Brief History

Construction in Mutual 14 began in 1974-75, but was brought to a halt for two years by a Montgomery County sewer moratorium. Work was renewed with vigor in 1976 and by early 1977 new residents began drifting in. The first meeting of the Condominium of Unit Owners of Mutual 14 was held on August 31, 1977.

Today Mutual 14 remains a vital part of the expanding Leisure World community. It is centrally located, bordered by the first fairway of the community golf course, Interlachen Drive and North Leisure World Boulevard. The services and activity sites of the community are within walking distance, or are easily accessed by scheduled community transportation. Immediately outside the main gate of the community, the Leisure World Plaza Shopping Center offers shopping and other commercial/professional services.

The Mutual is comprised of eight three-story elevator apartment houses with twenty-one apartments each and twenty-five Plaza Homes (i.e. 193 units). Each apartment house boasts a carport for one automobile for each unit, six (6) three bedroom units, twelve (12) two bedrooms units and three (3) one bedroom units and is constructed with outside hallways, called ‘catwalks’. The Plaza Homes contain two or three bedrooms, one, two or three car garages. Some of the Plaza Homes have a Florida Room and border on the first hole of the golf course.

The landscaping in Mutual 14 is attentively monitored by a dedicated committee of residents, whose recommendations are implemented by the employees of a major landscaping firm. Their care and expertise is evident everywhere in the beautiful plantings that grace our properties. These plantings can be observed in the beautifully planted atria on the first floor of every apartment building, a ‘central park’ between four of the buildings, and lovely gardens at the entrances from Leisure World’s main streets and around the Plaza Homes.

Property maintenance activities are ongoing. Inspection and planning are given high priority in meeting the maintenance and replacement needs within Mutual 14.

Historically, that which is achieved in Mutual 14 comes about through the efforts of its residents. It is a neighborhood governed by those who live within it. To this end, a seven member elected Board of Directors acts on recommendations made by the four standing committees (Advisory, Landscape, Property Management and Social) and addresses any issues related to compliance with the rules and bylaws of the Mutual.
